biography
of djblakemiller
I
was born and raised in Ohio . . . korn kuntry! I was shipped off to the
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island, New York (Kings Point) for
4 years of military college. Occasional visits to The Limelight and
other New York clubs were common. It was 1992 and DJ Karwax used to rein
the airwaves around Manhattan on Sunday nights. I used to tape his show
and make self-mixes to listen to at the gym and on my free time.
Midshipman Hans Rittenger over in 5th Company was one of the first
around to get a whoppin "sound card" for his computer. The $400
Soundblaster was pushing our x386, 33Mhz, 64Mb RAM Zenith Computers . .
. but it was capable of producing sound and creating "dance" music.
I have always loved music with rhythm. Reggae was my first
"favorite" music. Electronica was put in my blood.
Doing
nothing more than enjoying the music and collecting and buying the big
name CD's and albums for years, I started traveling through work in late
1990's. London was the first, and the "mega club" was found, Turnmills,
where hard driving techno went till 8am. Then Asia was found and I spent
6 months over a 3 year in Singapore, visiting clubs such as NOX and Zouk
Club. Weekend visits to Thailand were cool too. I started to arrange
business trips around weekends and club location to see international
DJ's and enjoy local talent. I've seen Paul Okenfold and Timo Mass in
Singapore and similar shows. The last was Rio De Janeiro, Brazil were a
week was spent in Copa Cabana.
In December 2001, I was flipping through the local paper and saw an
ad for "DJ Lessons" Still not knowing what was fully behind the scenes,
I said "what the hell . . . " That was it, and within 2 months, I had 2
turntables, a mixer and a crate full of vinyl. I may be an old fart for
this scene, but I love the music and I love the scene . . . simple!
I used to be in the corporate world "playing" engineer and
project manager and technical sales & marketing guru in the shipbuilding and
offshore industry, but now I "work" full time as a DJ and
Graphic/Web Designer. I also coach a running club - there's
nothing better than "going to work" in your gym shorts - literally.
And on the side, I enjoy running (coach a running club), go to
church, working out, outdoors (backpacking, camping) and I listen to
House Music all day long.
